  • SOHAMINDIA and Dr. Daman Ahuja: Transforming Public Health Through Grassroots Empowerment

Dr. Daman Ahuja, Public Health and Community Engagement Expert, shares how SOHAMINDIA integrates traditional wisdom and modern solutions to tackle public health challenges and empower communities.

SOHAMINDIA is a testament to how public health can be redefined through mindful development and grassroots empowerment. Spearheaded by Dr. Daman Ahuja, a renowned public health expert with over 30 years of experience, the organization blends traditional philosophies with innovative public health solutions.

From combating child labor to addressing mental health issues in adolescents, Dr. Ahuja’s journey reflects a commitment to sustainable, community-led initiatives. His work spans collaborations with iconic activists like Swami Agnivesh and Kailash Satyarthi, tackling pressing issues such as HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, and child rights. In this interview, he sheds light on the evolution of public health in India and shares his vision for the future.

    1. Reflecting on your extensive experience, could you share the foundational moments that led you to champion public health and community engagement, particularly in challenging sectors like HIV/AIDS and reproductive health? How did these early experiences shape your approach to health services and grassroots activism?

My foundational journey began with the realization of health inequities while working on child labor issues. As a researcher at VV Giri National Labour Institute and through my association with Swami Agnivesh, I witnessed how health challenges were deeply intertwined with social justice.

The turning point came when I founded Naya Prayas and saw how sustainable change requires both policy intervention and grassroots mobilization. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in the late 1990s presented a critical challenge—breaking down stigma while building community trust. Leading the Red Ribbon Express project at NACO taught me that effective health interventions must start with community dialogue.

Whether working on the accountability of health services through the Population Foundation of India or strengthening the ASHA program as State ASHA Manager in Haryana, I learned that sustainable public health solutions emerge when we empower communities to become active participants rather than passive recipients. These experiences shaped my belief that community engagement isn’t just a strategy—it’s the cornerstone of any successful public health initiative.

    2. You’ve collaborated with influential activists like Swami Agnivesh and Kailash Satyarthi on initiatives addressing bonded and child labor. What were the most significant challenges in these projects, and how did your approach in public health translate to tackling labor and child rights issues?

My collaboration with Swami Agnivesh and other activists illuminated the complex intersection between child labor and public health. Through my PhD research, I explored psychological injuries in child laborers, uncovering a critical but often overlooked dimension—the profound mental health impact on children forced into labor.

At VV Giri National Labour Institute, we found that children in hazardous work environments often faced both immediate physical injuries and long-term developmental challenges. This research became the backbone of SOHAMINDIA’s trauma-informed intervention strategies, addressing both immediate needs and long-term psychological recovery.

Our approach integrated mental health support and policy advocacy, highlighting that child labor is not just an economic issue but a public health emergency requiring urgent attention. These findings supported our policy advocacy efforts, helping stakeholders recognize the far-reaching impacts of child labor.

    3. With over 30 years in the field, how do you view the evolution of community health initiatives in India? Are there specific shifts in public health accountability or community involvement that stand out as particularly impactful?

Over these three decades, I’ve witnessed a transformative shift in India’s community health landscape. As a member of the Secretariat of the Advisory Group on Community Action (AGCA), I had the privilege of observing and influencing this evolution across 17 states. The most significant change has been the transition from top-down healthcare delivery to community-owned initiatives.

Through my work with AGCA and Population Foundation of India, I’ve seen how empowering community forums has revolutionized public health accountability. The strengthening of Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Committees (VHSNCs), Jan Arogya Samities (JAS), and Rogi Kalyan Samities (RKS) across these states has created a robust framework for community participation.

The institutionalization of community monitoring through these forums has been particularly impactful. I’ve trained over 3,000 medical professionals and community leaders in participatory approaches, witnessing firsthand how this strengthens health service delivery and accountability. Programs like the ASHA initiative demonstrate the power of this approach, transforming communities into active stakeholders in health governance.

    4. In working closely with adolescents and addressing mental health issues, what are the main challenges young people face today? How can community health initiatives better support adolescents in navigating their mental and emotional health?

Today’s adolescents face unprecedented challenges at the intersection of digital pressures, academic stress, and societal expectations. Through SOHAMINDIA’s mindfulness-based approach, we blend traditional wisdom with modern psychology to address these issues effectively.

Our programs integrate teachings like Vedanta philosophy, Swami Vivekananda’s practical insights, and Daniel Goleman’s emotional intelligence frameworks, fostering resilience and self-awareness among adolescents. This holistic approach empowers young people to navigate mental health challenges sustainably.

    5. Looking ahead, what areas in community health and public accountability do you feel need the most attention, and what strategies could best address these gaps?
We must enhance public health accountability through forums like VHSNCs, JAS, and RKS while ensuring technology complements—not replaces—personal interactions in healthcare delivery.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of community resilience. Moving forward, SOHAMINDIA will continue blending ancient wisdom with modern healthcare practices to build sustainable health systems that address emerging challenges like mental health and non-communicable diseases.
    Conclusion:
Dr. Daman Ahuja’s journey reflects a lifelong commitment to empowering communities through sustainable health interventions. His leadership at SOHAMINDIA and collaborations with institutions like NACO and the Population Foundation of India have transformed public health systems across India.
By blending traditional wisdom with modern strategies, Dr. Ahuja has redefined public health as a collaborative and inclusive effort. His insights offer a roadmap for creating resilient health systems and empowering communities to take charge of their health journeys.

  • Sustainable Decor: Transforming Homes While Protecting the Planet

An exclusive interview with Ashutosh Pandey, Co-Founder of Life n Colors

Sustainable Decor is more than a trend; it’s a movement towards mindful living and responsible consumption. From choosing eco-friendly materials to understanding the lifecycle of furnishings, sustainable decor empowers consumers to make decisions that enhance their homes while reducing environmental impact. By embracing this approach, individuals can create stylish, durable, and environmentally conscious spaces that reflect both personal taste and a commitment to sustainability.

    1. How can consumers identify whether a brand is truly using sustainable production practices?
Consumers can identify whether a brand is genuinely sustainable by looking for certifications like Fair Trade, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). Brands committed to sustainability provide transparent details about their materials, energy usage, and waste management. They also adhere to ethical labor practices.
Customer reviews and independent audits can validate these claims, offering additional assurance. Brands that emphasize reducing water and energy consumption and avoid harmful chemicals are leading the charge in making decor environmentally friendly.

    2. What steps can consumers take to extend the lifespan of their decor to reduce overall waste?
Extending the lifespan of decor starts with choosing high-quality, durable materials like bamboo or reclaimed wood. Regular maintenance, cleaning, and repairs also ensure longevity.
Repurposing or upcycling old pieces offers a creative and sustainable way to breathe new life into Sustainable Decor. For example, transforming an old wooden table into a rustic coffee table not only saves resources but also creates a unique design element. Additionally, timeless designs are a better investment compared to fleeting trends.

    3. What are the most important factors to consider when designing eco-friendly furnishings?
Designing eco-friendly furnishings involves prioritizing several critical factors:
Sustainable Materials: Use of renewable and non-toxic options like organic cotton and avoiding harmful materials like PVC.
Energy-Efficient Production: Processes that minimize energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions, and conserve water.
Durability: Ensuring products last for decades, reducing the frequency of replacements.
Non-Toxic Finishes: Use finishes that are safe for both the environment and indoor air quality.
Waste Minimization: Recycling scraps and implementing circular economy practices.
Eco-Friendly Packaging: Materials like biodegradable or recyclable packaging reduce environmental impact.
By addressing these factors, Life n Colors aims to deliver eco-friendly products that combine beauty with responsibility.

    4. How can consumers assess the hidden environmental costs associated with decor, such as water usage or chemical treatments during production?
Hidden environmental costs can be uncovered through brand transparency. Research the certifications and sustainability claims on their websites. Certifications like LEED or Fair Trade often highlight compliance with water conservation or avoidance of toxic chemicals.
Additionally, consumer awareness campaigns and third-party validations offer insights into a brand’s production footprint, ensuring informed choices.

    5. What is a sustainable manufacturing process like, and how is it different from traditional manufacturing?
    Sustainable manufacturing prioritizes:
Resource Efficiency: Reducing water and energy usage and focusing on renewable resources.
Waste Reduction: Implementing circular economy practices such as recycling and reusing materials.
Toxic-Free Processes: Eliminating harmful chemicals to protect both the environment and workers.
Ethical Labor Practices: Ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions.
In contrast, traditional manufacturing often prioritizes cost-efficiency over environmental impact, leading to higher emissions, waste, and energy use. Sustainable manufacturing not only reduces harm but also aligns with consumer demands for eco-conscious products.
    Conclusion
The journey toward sustainable decor begins with informed choices. From certifications like FSC to adopting timeless, durable designs, every decision matters. By embracing eco-friendly furnishings, consumers can contribute to a greener planet while enjoying stylish, long-lasting products.

  • Ayurveda Kendra: Empowering Wellness Through Transformative Ayurvedic Care

Dr. Sudha Asokan, Founder of Dr. Sudha’s Ayurveda Kendra, a trailblazer in Ayurvedic healthcare, discusses her journey, unique treatments, and the global growth of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda Kendra, under the visionary leadership of Dr. Sudha Asokan, has redefined the standards of Ayurvedic care by seamlessly integrating tradition with modernity. With its roots deeply embedded in centuries-old practices, Ayurveda Kendra stands as a beacon of hope for patients globally, offering transformative treatments for conditions like paralysis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lifestyle disorders. Driven by a passion for authenticity and patient care, the center combines ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern diagnostic tools to deliver unparalleled results, setting it apart in the wellness industry.

With a career spanning decades and a vision that extends globally, Dr. Sudha Asokan shares her inspiring story of dedication, innovation, and authenticity in the world of Ayurveda.

    1. You come from a long line of Ayurvedic practitioners. How did your family’s legacy shape your personal approach to Ayurveda, and how has it influenced your philosophy at Dr. Sudha’s Ayurveda Kendra?

I come from an Ayurvedic family; both my father and grandfather were Ayurveda doctors. I did not have much time to learn from my grandfather as I stayed with my father, who had postings at various places. Living with my father, I had the opportunity to meet many patients and observe the treatments carried out at the hospital.

This experience made me closer to my father than to my siblings. While at the hospital, my father would often discuss different diseases, and I would keenly listen, even though I did not fully understand everything at the time. Many people came to the hospital on wheelchairs or stretchers, and after 14-21 days of treatment, they were able to walk normally. Foreign patients, even in the 1960s, came for treatment.

As a child, I was affected by polio. The success of Ayurvedic treatment in my own life, thanks to my father’s care, gave me the motivation to explore this miraculous science. The first miracle I experienced in practice was when I treated a paralyzed neighbor. Using the skills I had learned from my father and the knowledge I had gained, I prepared my own medicines. After the treatment, my neighbor was able to walk again.

I still carry that spirit and undying interest in treating patients to this day. I strongly believe that those who possess knowledge, experience, and a deep passion for this sacred science will continue to uncover its mysteries every day.

    2. Ayurveda is often viewed as an ancient science, but you’ve incorporated modern advancements in your treatments. Can you talk about how you balance tradition with innovation, especially in treating complex conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and paralysis?

I always follow the ancient Ayurvedic treatments, but I make slight adjustments depending on the nature of the diseases, especially with conditions like arthritis, slipped discs, spondylosis, etc.

For certain diagnoses, we rely on modern diagnostic methods, such as X-rays, MRIs, blood investigations, ultrasound, and CT scans. I believe these are essential for accurate diagnosis. By combining these tools with Ayurvedic methods, we ensure precision while maintaining authenticity in our treatments.

    3. Your clinic has expanded from a modest center in Delhi to a global leader in Ayurvedic treatments. What do you think were the key factors that contributed to the growth and success of your center?

The success of Dr. Sudha’s Ayurveda Kendra is the result of the collective efforts of all the members, including doctors, managers, and therapists. Most of them are our own people, and everyone is hardworking, devoted, and genuine.

The dedication to maintaining authenticity in Panchakarma treatments, innovative patient care, and our ability to treat complex cases like paralysis and slipped discs has built trust among our patients globally.

    4. With the rise of wellness trends, many claim to offer Ayurvedic treatments, but few adhere to authentic practices. How does Dr. Sudha’s Ayurveda Kendra ensure it maintains the integrity of traditional Ayurvedic treatments while adapting to modern demands?

Our treatments stand out because of their method of delivery. The massages we perform are different from those offered at other centers. We provide a unique combination of therapies, following the most traditional methods, which yield better results and health benefits.

In today’s fast-paced world, new diseases are emerging, and the demands of people are increasing. Many individuals come to us with lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, obesity, and stress, seeking a quick recovery.

We differentiate ourselves from other wellness centers by maintaining authenticity. Our Panchakarma treatments are fully authentic, and the medicines we use are herbal, with no metals added. We also provide special bridal massages that are natural and herbal.

    5. What future initiatives or expansions do you envision for Dr. Sudha’s Ayurveda Kendra as you continue to promote holistic health through Ayurveda, both in India and globally?
We have our own drug manufacturing unit, which allows us to modify medicines into various forms to meet modern needs. We are planning to produce gel-based medicines, ointments, pain sprays, and chemical-free cosmetic products such as lip balm, face wash, and kajal.
Our next plan is to start an institution to train and mold experienced therapists. With early aging becoming one of humanity’s biggest concerns, we believe that Ayurvedic rejuvenation therapies will be even more beneficial, particularly for geriatric patients, in the future.
    Conclusion
Dr. Sudha’s Ayurveda Kendra stands as a testament to the timeless relevance of Ayurveda in today’s fast-evolving healthcare landscape. Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Sudha Asokan, the Kendra has bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, offering authentic treatments that resonate with the needs of today’s patients.
By combining her family’s rich legacy with innovative practices and a commitment to holistic health, Dr. Sudha has ensured that Ayurveda remains a beacon of hope for those seeking natural and effective healing solutions. With plans for global expansion and initiatives to train future therapists, the Kendra is poised to continue its legacy of excellence, bringing Ayurveda to the forefront of global wellness.

Competing without external funding also demanded meticulous resource management and strategic innovation.

  • Environmental Impact: Transforming Furnishings with Sustainable Choices

Ashutosh Pandey, Co-founder of Life n Colors, Explores the Environmental Costs of Furnishings and the Path to Sustainability

Environmental impact is a critical factor to consider when choosing decor for your home. When you place that beautiful new sofa in your living room, you’re likely thinking about how it ties the space together, or perhaps how comfortable it feels after a long day. However, what we often overlook, is the journey that a piece of furniture has taken to arrive in your home. Like every product we use, decor has a lifecycle, from its inception in a designer’s mind to its eventual disposal.
The lifecycle of your furnishings carries significant environmental costs, from design to disposal. By understanding these impacts whether through the choice of sustainable materials, the carbon footprint of production and transportation, or end-of-life disposal options one can make more eco-conscious decor decisions. Embracing environmentally friendly choices not only enhances your home but also helps reduce your overall impact on the planet.

    The Lifecycle of Decor
Here’s a breakdown of the key stages in a product’s lifecycle:
Design: The lifecycle of the decor piece starts with design. In this stage decisions about materials, durability, and recyclability are taken. These choices shape how environmentally friendly a product will be throughout its life.
Production: Then comes the production stage, in this stage raw materials are turned into finished decor. This is often an energy-intensive process, where the environmental cost varies according to the resources and methods used.
Transportation: After production, the product needs to get from the factory to your home. Whether it travels by air, sea, or land, the distance covered and the mode of transport both add to its carbon footprint. However, certain modes of transport such as by land are much greener than travel by air.
Use: The lifespan of a product also matters while calculating its carbon footprint. Durable decor items reduce the need for replacements. Thus, helping to lower its overall environmental impact.
End-of-Life: Eventually, every piece of decor reaches the end of its useful life. However, its disposal i.e., whether it’s recycled, upcycled, or sent to a landfill, determines its lasting environmental footprint.
What Makes Decor Sustainable or Unsustainable?: The sustainability of decor hinges on factors like manufacturing, materials, production, and transportation. Recognizing these elements helps us make choices that support sustainability rather than harm it.
Materials: The choice of materials makes a big difference. Unsustainable options like PVc or Vinyl are derived from fossil fuels and are difficult to recycle. Therefore, they can end up polluting the planet for centuries. Similarly, water-based inks in wallpaper should be avoided to further minimize environmental harm. On the other hand, materials like reclaimed wood, bamboo, and natural fibers like organic cotton offer eco-friendly alternatives. Metals like aluminum and steel, though energy-heavy to produce, are also a great sustainable alternative. They can be endlessly recyclable, which helps reduce their long-term environmental impact.
Production Practices: The way decor is produced also matters. Conventional manufacturing processes often use excessive energy and water and rely on harmful chemicals that can run into rivers or pollute the soil. Sustainable manufacturing, in contrast, focuses on reducing energy and water consumption, minimizing waste, using renewable resources, and avoiding toxic chemicals.  It also emphasizes implementing circular economy practices, such as recycling and reusing materials, while ensuring ethical labor practices.
Transportation and Carbon Footprint: Shipping decor from the factory to your home isn’t without its environmental impact cost. The carbon footprint of transporting goods is determined by the distance traveled, the mode of transportation, and the weight of the product. Air transport has the highest carbon footprint, while sea and land transport are more efficient in terms of emissions per ton-kilometer. Another way to cut down the transportation-related carbon footprint of your decor can be by choosing decor that’s made locally.

End-of-Life Considerations: What Happens When the Decor Wears Out?
All decor eventually reaches the end of its useful life, but what happens next makes a huge difference. Unsustainable products often end up in landfills, where non-biodegradable materials like plastics and synthetic fabrics persist for decades or even centuries, contributing to pollution and environmental immpact harm. These materials are not only difficult to recycle but often release toxic substances as they break down. In contrast, sustainably designed decor takes end-of-life considerations into account. Products made from natural or recyclable materials are far easier to dispose of responsibly. Many eco-friendly items can be recycled, upcycled, or even composted, ensuring they don’t contribute to waste. Some companies even offer take-back programs where they collect old items for recycling or reuse, further reducing the environmental impact. Moreover, sustainable products are built to last for generations, reducing the need for frequent replacements and lowering overall waste.

Sustainable Decor- Where to Find it and How to Make it
The good news is that there are lots of ways to make your house fashionable and environmentally responsible with sustainable decor solutions that are getting easier to find. Start by looking for brands that place a high value on sustainable practices. To do this, look for certifications such as Fair Trade, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). You can also check if the brand provides clear information about its materials, energy usage, waste management, and labor conditions. Brands committed to eco-friendly practices often highlight their efforts to reduce water and energy consumption, use non-toxic materials, and support ethical labor practices. Additionally, customer reviews and third-party audits can also be used help validate a brand’s sustainability claims.
Furthermore, don’t discount the allure and environmental impact advantages of pre-loved options; internet marketplaces and flea markets can be gold mines for one-of-a-kind items at a lesser environmental cost. If you’re inventive, you can also think about repurposing something you currently own. This do-it-yourself method not only cuts waste but also gives your design a unique touch. Finally, quality and durability should be given first priority when making new purchases. Purchasing long-lasting, well-made items lowers the need for frequent replacements, which eventually minimizes your environmental effects. As consumers, we wield significant power in shaping the future of home decor. By making informed, mindful choices, we can create beautiful living spaces that not only reflect our personal style but also respect our planet.
Conclusion: Sustainable decor is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity for environmentally conscious living. By understanding the lifecycle of furnishings and choosing eco-friendly options, consumers can reduce their environmental impact while creating spaces that reflect both style and responsibility. Whether it’s choosing reclaimed wood over PVC or supporting local artisans, every decision matters in shaping a greener planet.

The integration of AI and RPA ensures agility, reduced operational costs, and better decision-making, keeping businesses competitive in dynamic markets.

    Challenges and Responsible Implementation
While the benefits of AI and RPA are significant, challenges like ethical concerns, data security, and high implementation costs cannot be overlooked. Companies must prioritize:
Verified AI Models: Ensure ethical and compliant use of AI technologies.
Data Security: Protect sensitive information to avoid legal and financial repercussions.
Balance Between Automation and Human Judgment: Retain human oversight for critical decisions to maintain trust and accountability.
    Driving Innovation Across Industries
The integration of AI and RPA is proving to be a game-changer across various industries. For example, in the finance sector, RPA automates regulatory compliance tasks, while AI provides fraud detection and risk analysis. In supply chain management, RPA manages inventory updates, while AI predicts demand trends and optimizes logistics. This combination not only enhances efficiency but also encourages businesses to innovate and adapt to shifting market demands. By leveraging these advanced tools, organizations can redefine their operational strategies and unlock new avenues for growth and value creation.
    Conclusion
The combination of AI and RPA is not merely a technological advancement; it represents a paradigm shift in how businesses approach efficiency, innovation, and customer satisfaction. By streamlining repetitive tasks through RPA and enabling data-driven, intelligent decision-making with AI, organizations are equipping themselves to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving digital world.
However, the integration of these technologies requires a strategic approach. Businesses must prioritize ethical implementation, robust data security, and a balanced coexistence of human judgment and automation. As industries increasingly embrace these tools, they also open doors to enhanced creativity, improved operational agility, and transformative customer experiences.
The synergy between AI and RPA is already revolutionizing sectors such as finance, healthcare, retail, and supply chain management, proving their adaptability and impact. As businesses look ahead, the ability to harness these technologies effectively will determine their resilience and competitiveness in the global marketplace.
As Niranjan Gidwani rightly emphasizes, adopting integrated automation with a foundation of integrity and compliance is not just a path to operational success—it is a commitment to sustainable growth and innovation. Organizations that align themselves with these principles stand to achieve long-term excellence, driving progress not only within their industries but across the broader technological landscape.
