From SGU to NHS: How Indian Medical Graduates Can Secure GMC Registration in the UK
Indian students pursuing medicine at St. George’s University (SGU) in Grenada now have a clear, structured pathway to register with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom, making them eligible to work in NHS hospitals and contribute to the country’s world-class healthcare system.
The GMC is the statutory body responsible for maintaining the official register of medical practitioners in the United Kingdom. Any international medical graduate must be formally registered and licensed by the GMC to legally practice medicine in the UK. SGU’s globally recognised Doctor of Medicine (MD) program aligns with this framework, providing Indian students with the academic foundation and procedural clarity to transition from university to medical practice.
Before attempting PLAB, graduates must first verify their medical credentials through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates’ EPIC system. This is a global verification portal that ensures each candidate’s medical qualifications meet the criteria required by UK health authorities. Once credentials are verified and exams are cleared, students must complete identity checks and health documentation to be eligible for licensing.
Once GMC registration is complete, Indian SGU graduates can begin practising medicine in the UK typically by entering the system through Foundation Year 2 (F2) or Trust Grade roles. These roles are crucial for hands-on training and gaining practical exposure under NHS guidelines. Following successful completion of these placements, doctors may pursue specialty training or continue to grow within the NHS framework.
According to UK Home Office data, Indian doctors form one of the largest pools of international medical professionals working in the NHS. With the ongoing demand for qualified medical professionals across the UK, Indian students from SGU are well-positioned to fill talent gaps while growing in a professionally fulfilling healthcare system.
St. George’s University, founded in 1976, has become one of the most internationally diverse medical schools globally, with over 18,000 graduates practising medicine worldwide. Its commitment to transparency, mobility, and regulatory compliance has made it a top choice among Indian families seeking long-term careers abroad in healthcare.
