  • EnglishHelper to Support Punjab Government in Delivering English Proficiency Tools to Students in All Districts

With a focus on Grades 9 to 12, the program combines classroom instruction and AI-enabled tools to make English learning accessible across 3,600 government schools

A new chapter in language learning has begun in Punjab’s government schools. The Government of Punjab, in collaboration with EnglishHelper, has introduced a state-wide English language proficiency program designed to reach 750,000 students across 23 districts over a three-year rollout.
Titled The English Edge, the program focuses on Grades 9 to 12 and aims to bridge communication gaps by introducing a blended learning approach that integrates teacher-led instruction with digital learning tools. A total of 3,600 government schools will participate in the initiative, which is being introduced in three structured phases. The first phase, already underway, covers 500 schools and approximately 300,000 students.

The classroom component is anchored by ReadToMe, a curriculum-aligned reading support tool developed by EnglishHelper. Students will also engage in self-learning through a complementary tool known as the Reading and Comprehension Assistant, enabling them to listen, read, and follow content at their own pace a method that supports diverse learning styles and local classroom realities.
The program reflects the priorities of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which calls for stronger foundational literacy, digital access, and equitable education. It also aligns with the state’s broader goals of making students more competitive in national and international job markets where English proficiency plays a crucial role.

According to officials, this is one of Punjab’s most extensive public–private efforts in the education sector. While the Government of Punjab will coordinate rollout and monitoring, the funding for the program is being mobilised through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions and philanthropic support.
EnglishHelper first entered the Punjab education space in 2013 through a pilot program, later expanding under a partnership with USAID in 2015. A formal agreement between the Government and the company was signed in 2021, setting the foundation for this large-scale deployment. Data collected from earlier phases suggests measurable improvements in reading fluency, comprehension, and classroom engagement.

“This initiative focuses on all four core pillars of language acquisition reading, writing, listening, and speaking,” said Deepak Verma, CEO of EnglishHelper. “Through a blend of AI-enabled technology and classroom support, we’re helping students acquire skills that open doors not just to exams, but to meaningful futures.”
Educators in the participating schools will undergo specific training to integrate the tools into their daily lesson plans. The intent is not to replace teachers but to supplement existing practices with structured support that can scale efficiently across the state’s diverse regions.

The decision to concentrate on secondary and senior secondary grades stems from the growing importance of English proficiency in higher education and competitive examinations. Punjab’s school administrators note that demand for English-language skill-building has steadily increased, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns.
By the end of its third phase, The English Edge will cover more than 3,600 schools in every district of Punjab. The program is expected to significantly contribute to literacy goals while also supporting long-term social mobility and employment outcomes.
This effort reflects an evolving model of how public systems and private partners can jointly work toward measurable education reform one that focuses on consistent quality, digital inclusion, and student-centric implementation.
For more information on the initiative and progress updates, the official portal of EnglishHelper provides details on past deployments, learning tools, and program scale.

  • Where India’s Students Head Next: UK, Germany, UAE See Record Rise, Prodigy Finance Finds

UK leads with 732,285 international enrolments; Germany, France, and the UAE report sharp growth. Prodigy Finance data reveals how Indian students are choosing education destinations with purpose and permanence.

Not every student story begins with privilege. For many aspiring scholars across India’s small towns and tier-2 cities, studying abroad is more than a milestone, it’s a mission. From securing a family’s future to breaking generational barriers, the decision to pursue international education carries deep-rooted intention. A new insight report from Prodigy Finance captures this shift, spotlighting where Indian students are headed and why.
The United Kingdom has emerged as the most popular global destination, with over 732,285 international students enrolled in 2023-24, according to U.K. Parliament data. Germany follows closely, hosting nearly 400,000 international students, including 50,000 Indians, per DAAD. France has crossed 440,000, and the UAE has seen an extraordinary 29% rise in international enrolments, now hosting over 42,000 students in Dubai alone.

These numbers reflect more than trends, they signal a re-evaluation of what students seek: long-term value, cultural inclusion, and post-study prospects. As Sonal Kapoor, Global Chief Business Officer at Prodigy Finance, puts it: You may be born with limited choices, but how you live and what you achieve is in your hands.
The platform, which helps students from over 100 countries finance their global education, is witnessing a clear pattern: students from non-metro cities are leading the charge. Whether from India’s Northeast or rural Maharashtra, these individuals see education not as a status symbol, but as a transformative tool.

Many are also young women defying social constraints. Prodigy highlights the story of Prachi, a student whose journey from a small Indian town to a top global university has become an online symbol of quiet resilience. Kapoor notes, Working at Prodigy has shown me incredible stories of determination from women who are rewriting their futures despite resistance.
In today’s world of rising tuition, geopolitical uncertainty, and complex visa regimes, Indian students are making more pragmatic decisions. Countries that offer clarity, inclusion, and pathways to career growth are gaining favour.

Prodigy Finance’s data reveals that for this new generation of students, success isn’t just about a degree. It’s about security, employability, and the ability to give back not just to themselves, but to the families and communities they represent.
As the global education map shifts, one thing is clear: India’s students aren’t just travelling abroad. They’re carrying a purpose with them.

  • From SGU to NHS: How Indian Medical Graduates Can Secure GMC Registration in the UK

The official roadmap includes eligibility, PLAB preparation, EPIC verification, and entry-level NHS roles, empowering SGU graduates to contribute to UK’s healthcare system.

Indian students pursuing medicine at St. George’s University (SGU) in Grenada now have a clear, structured pathway to register with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom, making them eligible to work in NHS hospitals and contribute to the country’s world-class healthcare system.
The process, designed in compliance with UK medical standards and institutional collaborations, outlines every step Indian SGU graduates must follow to obtain GMC registration and become licensed doctors in the UK. From eligibility documentation and PLAB exam preparation to EPIC verification and Tier 2 sponsorships, the route is now more accessible and transparent than ever.

The GMC is the statutory body responsible for maintaining the official register of medical practitioners in the United Kingdom. Any international medical graduate must be formally registered and licensed by the GMC to legally practice medicine in the UK. SGU’s globally recognised Doctor of Medicine (MD) program aligns with this framework, providing Indian students with the academic foundation and procedural clarity to transition from university to medical practice.
One of the core components of the GMC registration process is passing the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test. This two-part examination assesses the clinical knowledge and communication skills of international medical graduates intending to practise in the UK. PLAB 1 tests medical theory through multiple-choice questions, while PLAB 2 is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) conducted in the UK. Indian SGU graduates must pass both exams before applying for registration.

Before attempting PLAB, graduates must first verify their medical credentials through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates’ EPIC system. This is a global verification portal that ensures each candidate’s medical qualifications meet the criteria required by UK health authorities. Once credentials are verified and exams are cleared, students must complete identity checks and health documentation to be eligible for licensing.
SGU’s Indian alumni are already part of a growing global network contributing to major healthcare systems, including the NHS. SGU is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and its graduates are recognised by all major medical councils worldwide. This includes the National Medical Commission (NMC) in India, the US Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), and the GMC in the UK.

Once GMC registration is complete, Indian SGU graduates can begin practising medicine in the UK typically by entering the system through Foundation Year 2 (F2) or Trust Grade roles. These roles are crucial for hands-on training and gaining practical exposure under NHS guidelines. Following successful completion of these placements, doctors may pursue specialty training or continue to grow within the NHS framework.
SGU’s academic advising teams assist students at each stage of this process, from preparing for PLAB to understanding visa and sponsorship requirements. Graduates applying for work in the UK must also obtain a Tier 2 (General) work visa, which is usually sponsored by the NHS Trust employing the candidate. SGU helps bridge this process by guiding students on the necessary paperwork and post-registration steps.

According to UK Home Office data, Indian doctors form one of the largest pools of international medical professionals working in the NHS. With the ongoing demand for qualified medical professionals across the UK, Indian students from SGU are well-positioned to fill talent gaps while growing in a professionally fulfilling healthcare system.
What makes the SGU-to-GMC transition unique is the institution’s emphasis on outcome-driven global medical education. SGU’s Indian office works closely with students and families to explain the GMC registration roadmap from day one of enrolment. With clear documentation and hands-on support, Indian students no longer have to navigate the complexities of international licensing systems alone.

St. George’s University, founded in 1976, has become one of the most internationally diverse medical schools globally, with over 18,000 graduates practising medicine worldwide.
