India enters a new era in biologics as Minister D. Sridhar Babu inaugurates the 1 Bio facility at Genome Valley

Senior leaders including Sanjay Kumar, Shakthi M. Nagappan, Tony Acciarito and Srinath Venkatesh joined the Minister to introduce the facility and outline its national significance.

The Government of Telangana marked a major moment in India’s life sciences journey with the inauguration of 1 Bio, the nation’s first single use bioprocess design and scale up facility. The launch, held within Genome Valley on 24 November 2025, signals a significant expansion of the State’s innovation ecosystem and sets new expectations for how India can strengthen its position in biologics and next generation therapeutics. The event was led by Hon’ble Minister Shri D. Sridhar Babu who underscored the role of the new facility in shaping the next phase of Genome Valley’s growth and reinforcing Telangana’s presence in the global life sciences landscape.
The State has long recognised the need for predictable and accessible scale up infrastructure, an area where cost, availability and capacity have remained persistent challenges. Telangana’s strong scientific base, combined with its established strengths in vaccines, biosimilars and discovery research, has prepared the ground for a facility capable of supporting both early stage innovators and established biopharma companies. The creation of 1 Bio addresses this long-standing gap by offering end to end process development and pilot scale validation that reduces capital burden and speeds up development timelines. For organisations navigating the complex path from discovery to clinical readiness, the new hub offers an opportunity to move with greater efficiency and confidence.

The development of 1 Bio reflects a broad collaborative effort. Conceptualised by the Government of Telangana through Telangana Lifesciences, the project is being built in partnership with the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation. The hub occupies a two acre site within Genome Valley and has been designed as an integrated environment where bioprocess development, scale up, analytical work and training operate under a single framework. At the centre of the new site is a facility equipped with single use bioreactors up to 500 litres, along with advanced upstream and downstream systems. A dedicated analytical suite strengthens the facility’s ability to support diverse biomolecule development programmes.
A key highlight of the inauguration was the partnership with Thermo Fisher Scientific. The Bioprocess Design Centre, created in collaboration with the global company, positions Genome Valley as a location capable of supporting GLP and GMP grade biomolecule development. For the broader sector, this marks a forward step in creating capacity that can handle emerging therapeutic modalities that require advanced bioprocessing design and rapid scale up cycles. The presence of Thermo Fisher within the ecosystem also indicates deeper alignment between global technology providers and India’s expanding biologics sector.

Beyond the bioprocess facility, the 1 Bio campus includes one hundred fifty thousand square feet of plug and play laboratories, configurable innovation suites and shared analytical spaces. These elements combine to offer a flexible environment suitable for teams working across varied stages of development. Dedicated bioprocess training labs add an important capability for building talent in areas where India continues to see rising demand.
The inauguration coincided with the twenty fifth anniversary of Genome Valley. To mark the occasion, Minister Sridhar Babu unveiled a new identity for the cluster that reflects its transformation into a global centre for research driven biotech innovation. The Minister also revealed the design for a gateway structure that will be created along the State Highway to establish a strong visual and cultural presence for the cluster. The new identity and planned infrastructure enhancements are part of a broader effort to prepare Genome Valley for its next phase of leadership.

In addition to the launch of 1 Bio, the Minister announced more than two hundred crore rupees of new infrastructure upgrades that will be undertaken by the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure and Investment Corporation. These include road widening, new greenfield roads, augmented power infrastructure, landscaping and streetscaping. The improvements are designed to enhance connectivity, strengthen reliability and improve the overall quality of life within the cluster, laying the foundation for future growth.
The State has also supported the project through an innovative public private partnership model with one hundred fifty crore rupees invested into core infrastructure. Thermo Fisher has contributed ninety crore rupees toward the Bioprocess Design Centre and its Customer Experience Centre located within the campus. 1 Bio is expected to attract an additional five hundred crore rupees in private investment from tenant companies and create more than five hundred high quality jobs across scientific, engineering and technical functions.

The inaugural event brought together senior leaders from the industry and government. Sanjay Kumar, IAS and Special Chief Secretary for Industries and Commerce and ITE and C, highlighted Telangana’s continued leadership in life sciences, noting that the State accounts for forty percent of India’s pharmaceutical production and a third of global vaccine supply. He stated that 1 Bio adds a vital dimension by making world class bioprocess scale up capacity available within the State.
Shakthi M. Nagappan, CEO of the Telangana Life Sciences Foundation, emphasised that 1 Bio fills one of the most critical gaps in India’s biologics ecosystem. He explained that both start ups and established firms can use the facility to validate bioprocesses, generate pilot data and strengthen confidence in manufacturability without the difficulty of large upfront investments. His remarks pointed to the importance of shared infrastructure in enabling faster and more reliable translation of research into real world applications.

Industry leaders from Thermo Fisher also addressed the gathering. Tony Acciarito, President for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, stated that India’s life sciences sector is at a pivotal point. He noted that the new centres reaffirm the company’s commitment to supporting the region through collaborations that move research and industry partners from idea to impact with greater speed. Srinath Venkatesh, Managing Director for India and South Asia, added that the company aims to build a sustainable ecosystem that integrates talent, infrastructure and advanced technology. He noted that expanding Thermo Fisher’s capability footprint reinforces its position as a preferred partner for innovation, development and manufacturing.
The launch of 1 Bio represents more than the addition of new infrastructure. It marks a strategic shift in how India prepares for the next wave of biologics and advanced therapeutics. As Genome Valley enters its next twenty five years, the creation of a shared, state of the art bioprocess design and scale up facility provides a foundation for scientific ambition, technological advancement and global competitiveness.
