VESIT students break new ground with chip design selected for Semicon India 2025
Student engineers from Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT) have entered uncharted territory for a private college in Maharashtra. Their indigenously designed integrated circuit was among the projects featured at Semicon India 2025, the country’s flagship platform for semiconductor self-reliance.
Faculty members at VESIT said the project was carried out by a student team working under the mentorship of the electronics department. The design, they explained, is aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical semiconductor development, a gap that is often only filled at IITs or public research institutions.
The institute, affiliated with the University of Mumbai but operating as an autonomous entity, described the opportunity as proof of what student-led innovation can achieve when supported by national programmes like C2S.

When an electric scooter leaves the comfort of city streets and climbs into the thin air of the Himalayas, it carries more than a battery. It carries a question: can India’s clean mobility story stretch beyond urban commutes into the nation’s toughest terrains?
This week, that question found an answer. The Ampere Nexus, developed by Greaves Electric Mobility, completed a demanding expedition from Chandigarh to the Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur Valley, climbing to an altitude of 13,200 feet and stopping barely 200 metres short of the Line of Control.The three day journey covered 425 kilometres of mountain roads through Shimla, Reckong Peo and Pooh before the final ascent. The ride was flagged off on August 9 and culminated on August 12, on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day.
On arrival, the riders were greeted by jawans of the Indian Army, who invited them to participate in a flag hoisting ceremony at the border outpost. The moment fused national pride with a powerful demonstration of technological confidence. An electric scooter built for everyday movement had just reached one of the country’s highest passes.The expedition has also been formally acknowledged by the India Book of Records, which certified the Ampere Nexus as the first electric two wheeler to reach Shipki La. But the symbolism went far beyond a record. For Greaves Electric Mobility, it was about proving that clean transport can move from India’s urban centres to its most remote frontiers.
The Ampere Nexus is no stranger to endurance rides. In 2024, it was ridden from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, an event that positioned it as more than just a city scooter. The Shipki La climb reinforces that reputation. From Campus to Catalyst: NIT Calicut Takes the Lead in Kerala’s Next Chapter of Scientific Access

National Institute of Technology Calicut has stepped into a pioneering role that places it at the intersection of national science policy and local innovation. At the flagship I-STEM outreach event, SAMAVESHA 11, held on campus from August 5 to 6, the institute was formally announced as India’s first I-STEM Catalyst Center.
The Indian Science, Technology and Engineering facilities Map (I-STEM), supported by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, is designed to democratise access to publicly funded research infrastructure. By choosing NIT Calicut as its first Catalyst Center, I-STEM is anchoring its mission in a regional hub that will serve Kerala’s researchers, innovators, and industry players.Dr. Harilal Bhaskar, National Coordinator and Chief Operating Officer of I-STEM, described the Catalyst model as “living laboratories” – spaces that bring high-end tools, hands-on training, and collaborative projects directly to local users. The aim is to bridge the gap between world-class infrastructure and those who have the ideas but lack the facilities to execute them.
The new role means NIT Calicut will act as a node for boosting the utilisation of advanced scientific equipment, increasing the visibility of underused resources, and enabling partnerships that span academia, industry, startups, and government bodies.Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut, called it a chance to narrow India’s scientific divide. “Becoming the first Catalyst Center gives us a responsibility to bring these capabilities to the grassroots,” he said. “It is about creating opportunities for collaboration and ensuring that world-class infrastructure serves the widest possible community.”
Over two days, SAMAVESHA 11 showcased the institute’s research facilities, conducted equipment demonstrations, and trained participants on using the I-STEM portal for booking and managing access. Delegates included faculty, R&D organisations, startups, and innovators from across Kerala, signalling a broad base of engagement from the outset.

Paras Defence Enters Indigenous Era of Satellite Reflectors with HPS GmbH Alliance
India’s homegrown aerospace leader and German deployable antenna expert partner exclusively to localize futuristic unfoldable reflector systems for space applications
In a landmark development for India’s aerospace ecosystem, Paras Defence and Space Technologies Ltd. has entered into a Teaming Agreement with Germany-based High Performance Space Structure Systems GmbH (HPS GmbH) to co-develop deployable antenna reflector systems for advanced satellite applications. The collaboration is exclusive to the Indian region and marks one of the country’s earliest private sector efforts to build critical space communication infrastructure domestically.
The systems under development will feature unfurlable reflectors, antennas that launch in a compact form and automatically expand once deployed in orbit. These reflectors are integral to next-generation satellite platforms that power high-speed internet, defence communication, real-time Earth imaging, and disaster response systems. Components covered in the agreement include reflector and arm assemblies, Hold-Down Release Mechanisms (HDRMs), deployment electronics, and thermal hardware.India has long relied on select international providers for these niche technologies. This collaboration changes that equation by enabling joint ownership of high-precision, mission-critical systems that had previously remained outside India’s manufacturing ecosystem.
Amit Mahajan, Director at Paras Defence, emphasized the strategic relevance of the deal: “India’s space ambitions now demand more than access, they require ownership. This partnership fills a critical gap in our satellite infrastructure, and by building these systems within India, we are laying the foundation for scalable, sovereign space platforms.”
Paras Defence will serve as the primary partner for Indian customers, leveraging its expertise across optics, electronics, RF and microwave systems, and mechanical subsystems. HPS GmbH, with its deep portfolio in European and international space missions, will contribute design and integration support from Germany and may co-establish similar capabilities in India under a future joint venture.The partnership also grants Paras exclusive access to HPS technologies within India. Together, the two companies will pursue opportunities with Indian government space agencies, defence clients, and commercial satellite operators.
This move comes at a time when India’s space economy is rapidly evolving. The funding will enable the startup to accelerate development of Infinity One, its modular satellite launch vehicle designed to deliver 350 kg payloads to altitudes of up to 800 km in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), marking a strategic leap in India’s indigenous space-tech ecosystem.
Founded in 2020 by Dr. Ravindra Raj Binod Mistri, Mr. Maulik Mota, and Ms. Stutika Padamshali, Omspace is headquartered in Ahmedabad with an international branch in Dubai under OSRE FZC. The company’s mission is to democratise space access for small and nano satellites through reusable, cost-efficient launch platforms tailored to emerging market needs.With this funding, Omspace plans to complete final prototyping and initiate test launch campaigns for Infinity One. The capital will also support the hiring of specialized R&D talent and upgrades to its manufacturing infrastructure and ground operations systems.

IGX trades record 24.5 million MMBtu in Q1FY26; gas prices fall 7% YoY in June 2025
Despite geopolitical disruptions, IGX marks milestone with 560 trades in Q1FY26 and launches its first 6-month Long Duration Contract; GIXI benchmark price softens on power sector demand slump.
The Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) reported record-breaking performance in the first quarter of FY26, trading 24.5 million MMBtu (619 MMSCM) of natural gas, up 109% year-on-year and 22% quarter-on-quarter. The momentum was partly driven by the execution of its first-ever trade in a 6-month Long Duration Contract (LDC), marking a significant milestone for India’s gas trading ecosystem.
In June 2025 alone, IGX traded 4 million MMBtu (101 MMSCM), a decline of 8% YoY and 14% MoM due to reduced demand from the power generation sector. A total of 130 trades were executed across all contract types. The most liquid contract was Monthly, followed by Day-Ahead, Weekly, and Fortnightly agreements.The Indian Gas Index (GIXI) for June 2025 settled at ₹989 or $11.5/MMBtu, down 7% YoY and 3% MoM. This price softness reflected lower industrial offtake, despite global gas benchmarks showing strength. The Dutch TTF benchmark stood at $12.4/MMBtu, WIM (ex-Dahej) at $14/MMBtu, and US Henry Hub at $3.7/MMBtu.
Regionally, GIXI-West was ₹999 or $11.6/MMBtu, higher than the all-India average. GIXI-East and South were down 5% and 4% respectively, impacted by transmission tariffs and tax variances. GIXI-Dahej was ₹981 or $11.4/MMBtu, trading at an 11% discount compared to WIM-Ex Dahej.During June, 78% of traded volumes were from the free market segment, while 22% came from domestic HPHT gas at ceiling price (₹863 or $10.04/MMBtu). Around 10.7 MMSCM of domestically produced gas was traded from delivery points including Bokaro (CBM), KG Basin, and ONGC Hazira.
Exchange deliveries during the month stood at approximately 6 million MMBtu (~5 MMSCMD). The most active delivery points were Dahej and Mallavaram. Other notable hubs included Jaya, Mhaskal, KG Basin, Bokaro, Bhadbhut, and Hazira.In Q1FY26, IGX executed a total of 560 trades, with Monthly contracts accounting for 74% of total volume, followed by Day-Ahead and Weekly contracts. The 6-month LDC accounted for 2% of volumes, affirming growing appetite for structured long-term contracts. Gadimoga emerged as the top delivery point with 50% share, followed by Dahej at 16%.
IGX currently enables trading at 21 delivery points, comprising 6 LNG terminals, 12 domestic field landfall points, and 3 pipeline interconnection nodes. Contracts include Intraday, Day-Ahead, Daily, Weekly, Fortnightly, and Monthly (up to 12 months), along with Long Duration Contracts of 3 and 6 months.
