  • India Moves Closer to Battery Self-Reliance as IFC Invests in GFCL EV’s Greenfield Facility

    In a step toward deepening India’s clean-tech supply chain, GFCL EV secures IFC investment to establish a fully integrated battery materials facility, enabling job creation, innovation, and value addition for the EV ecosystem.

    Gujarat Fluorochemicals Limited (GFL), one of India’s leading fluorochemicals producers, has announced a strategic partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. The development marks a milestone in India’s clean energy journey, as IFC invests approximately US$50 million in GFL’s subsidiary, GFCL EV Products Limited (“GFCL EV”), through compulsorily convertible instruments.

    The investment will support the creation of India’s first fully integrated battery materials facility, aimed at powering both electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage segments. The facility will help strengthen India’s participation in the global battery materials supply chain while supporting national goals of energy security, green mobility, and sustainable manufacturing.
    GFCL EV currently offers a wide array of battery-related products including:
    • Battery chemicals such as electrolyte salt (LiPF6), custom electrolyte formulations, and advanced additives
    • Cathode active materials (LFP)
    • Binders including PVDF and PTFE

    The company has backward integration into key raw materials, making it one of the few large-scale battery materials manufacturers worldwide with such capabilities.
    Speaking about the investment, Mr. Vivek Jain, Chairman of the INOXGFL Group, said, “We are delighted to welcome IFC as a strategic partner in GFCL EV. Their backing reaffirms our vision for a greener future. IFC’s global expertise and commitment to sustainability will help us scale faster, strengthen local value chains, and support India’s green transition.”
    Dr. Bir Kapoor, DMD and CEO of Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd., added, “This is IFC’s first investment in a battery materials company in India. It will allow us to scale up our manufacturing capabilities and reinforce India’s position as a reliable global partner in clean energy components.”

    Mr. Imad N Fakhoury, IFC Regional Division Director for South Asia, noted, “India is rapidly scaling its EV and energy storage sectors. This investment will enable India to build domestic capacity in advanced materials and become a vital part of the global supply chain.”

  • Next-gen military drone production begins in Hyderabad with JSW Defence and Shield AI’s $90M UAS facility

    Foundation stone laid for the Hyderabad-based VBAT manufacturing plant, backed by a $90 million investment and long-term technology transfer from US defence innovator Shield AI

    In a landmark move for India’s defence manufacturing ambitions, JSW Defence Pvt. Ltd. has commenced construction of a next-generation Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) facility in Hyderabad. The project marks the beginning of a $90 million partnership between JSW Defence and US-based defence technology company Shield AI, setting the stage for large-scale production of military drones under a long-term technology transfer arrangement.
    Located at EMC Maheshwaram in Telangana, the new plant will manufacture the VBAT drone system a fixed-wing, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform already deployed by forces such as the United States Marine Expeditionary Units. With full Transfer of Technology (ToT) rights and a clear roadmap, JSW’s new facility will enable not just assembly but end-to-end production of these advanced unmanned aerial systems.

    The project is aligned with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and reflects a maturing ecosystem for indigenous defence capabilities. Expected to be operational by the last quarter of 2026, the facility will also create a domestic supply chain, workforce training systems, and a sustainable infrastructure for MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) services related to unmanned systems.
    The foundation stone for the facility was laid by Mr. Parth Jindal of the JSW Group, in the presence of Shri Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Telangana’s Minister for IT, Electronics and Communication, and Industries and Commerce. The ceremony was also attended by senior officials from the Indian Armed Forces, the Telangana government, and Shield AI, marking a unified commitment to expanding defence capabilities in the country.

    Mr. Parth Jindal, speaking at the ceremony, stated, “Today’s milestone signals a bold new chapter in India’s journey toward self-reliance in next-generation defence technologies. Our collaboration with Shield AI reflects our shared ambition to bring mission-critical, globally benchmarked capabilities to India and to build an ecosystem that will define the future of unmanned systems for the nation.”
    He further added that the Hyderabad facility will not only serve Indian strategic needs but also function as a global production hub for the V-BAT drone platform, reinforcing India’s position in international defence supply chains.

    The VBAT platform, with its patented ducted design, is capable of vertical take-off and long-endurance missions. It supports a broad range of ISR functionalities, from reconnaissance over hostile terrains to direct battlefield deployment with front-line units. Its compact logistics footprint makes it suitable for rapid deployment in diverse environments, adding versatility to India’s defence toolkit.
    Mr. Sarjan Shah, Shield AI’s Managing Director for India, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative. “Shield AI is proud to be working alongside JSW in creating an indigenous production ecosystem for the V-BAT. The establishment of this world-class facility sets in motion the joint vision of the JSW Group and Shield AI to deepen Indo–US defence collaboration built on trust, transparency and shared strategic priorities.”

    The Hyderabad facility also serves as a symbol of technological diplomacy. With the US and India strengthening defence and trade ties, this project stands as a clear example of how industrial cooperation can align with shared geopolitical goals.
    According to defence analysts, the significance of a VBAT manufacturing line in India cannot be understated. While India has made strides in UAV development, access to a proven, combat-deployed platform like VBAT now to be produced domestically will dramatically enhance its tactical ISR capabilities.

    From pilot training to system integration and lifecycle support, JSW Defence plans to develop a full-service ecosystem around the drone. This approach not only builds domestic competence but reduces dependency on imports, a long-standing concern in the defence sector.
    The Telangana government’s active support for the aerospace and defence sectors has made Hyderabad a preferred location for such high-impact projects. With existing infrastructure, skilled manpower, and state-level incentives, the region continues to attract global defence collaborations.

    Industry observers also see this development as a potential catalyst for spin-off innovation. The convergence of aerospace engineering, AI, autonomy, and robotics within the VBAT programme may lead to new R&D investments and further strategic partnerships in the coming years.
    The joint venture underscores JSW Group’s broader push into strategic sectors that go beyond its traditional industrial footprint.   • DITE&C and ITG boost Canacona’s digital infrastructure with 100 WiFi hotspots, 240 CCTV cameras and expanded 5G coverage at Partagali Math

    His Holiness Vidyadheesh Teerth Swamiji inaugurated the rollout alongside Minister Rohan Khaunte, Dr Chandrakhant Shetye, Kabir Shirgaonkar, Praveen Volvotkar and Shrinivas Shenvi Dempo as Goa strengthens digital services around the Partagali Math and 77-foot idol site.

    The Department of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (DITE&C), in collaboration with Infotech Corporation of Goa Ltd (ITG), has significantly upgraded digital infrastructure at Shree Samsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math with the deployment of more than 100 WiFi access points, over 200 CCTV installations and improved 5G connectivity around the Math campus. The initiative, launched on November 27, reflects the State’s ongoing efforts to extend reliable digital services to high-footfall spiritual centres and rural pockets.

    The rollout was inaugurated by His Holiness, Paramapoojya Shreemad Vidyadheesh Teerth Shreepad Vader Swamiji in the presence of Shri Rohan Khaunte, Hon’ble Minister for IT, Electronics & Communications, Tourism and Printing & Stationery; Dr Chandrakhant Shetye, Chairman, ITG; Shri Kabir Shirgaonkar, Director, DITE&C; Shri Praveen Volvotkar, Managing Director, ITG; and Shri Shrinivas Shenvi Dempo, President, Central Committee & Sardha Panchashatamanotsava Committee.
    The initiative aligns with the vision of Dr Pramod Sawant, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa, to strengthen digital access across the State while supporting local economies and community-centric centres of culture and tourism.

    While Canacona already had 5G networks from Jio and BSNL, connectivity has been further strengthened with additional coverage from Airtel (Indus Towers) around the Math premises. This enhancement assumes greater significance as the area attracts rising footfall, particularly since the installation of the 77-foot bronze idol.
    Speaking at the launch, His Holiness Vidyadheesh Teerth Swamiji said, “I am grateful to the Goa Government and to Minister Rohan Khaunte for ensuring that all digital arrangements are in place ahead of the Friday celebrations. This initiative brings much-needed digital infrastructure to rural areas, and I appreciate the collective effort to support the Math and the wider community.”

    Minister Rohan Khaunte added, “The deployment of WiFi access points and surveillance infrastructure at the Math reinforces our commitment to strengthening Goa’s digital backbone. While it will support the immediate needs of the celebrations, its long-term impact will benefit residents, devotees and visitors. This upgrade will enhance the experience within the Math and contribute to positioning Canacona as a key spiritual tourism destination.”
    The project is being executed by Infotech Corporation of Goa Ltd, which has installed high-speed WiFi access points capable of delivering up to 10Gbps. Of the 100-plus hotspots, 57 are permanent and will continue serving the local community beyond the festive period. Additional temporary hotspots have been added to manage the expected surge in visitors for the Sardha Panchashatamanotsava celebrations.

    A total of 240 CCTV cameras are being installed across the Math premises, strengthening crowd management and public safety. Of these, 80 cameras are permanent. Select units are equipped with AI-based capabilities that support headcount monitoring and identification of habitual offenders based on data inputs from police authorities.
    With this rollout, DITE&C reinforces its long-standing aim to extend digital connectivity, safety infrastructure and seamless service delivery to every corner of Goa. By bringing these upgrades to the Partagali Math, the State ensures that both residents and pilgrims benefit from enhanced digital access as the region continues to evolve as a major spiritual and cultural hub.

  • Capgemini and Orano Take Robotics Beyond the Lab with Hoxo, a Prototype Built for Real Nuclear Operations

    Tested at Orano Melox in France’s Gard region, Hoxo is the first intelligent humanoid robot built for nuclear operations. Equipped with embedded AI and motion sensors, it will undergo a four-month evaluation by Orano and Capgemini to assess how physical AI can enhance precision, safety, and human collaboration in France’s €60 billion nuclear industry.

    In a development that could reshape the future of industrial automation, Capgemini and Orano have unveiled Hoxo, the first intelligent humanoid robot designed to function inside active nuclear environments. The project, now in its testing phase at the Orano Melox Ecole des Métiers in southern France, combines robotics, artificial intelligence, and digital simulation to redefine how humans and machines collaborate in high-sensitivity sectors.
    Built as a prototype for real-world use, Hoxo integrates embedded AI systems, advanced motion sensors, and real-time navigation capabilities. It is programmed to mirror human gestures, perform precise mechanical tasks, and adapt to complex surroundings typical of nuclear production sites. The initiative, jointly led by Orano’s innovation division and Capgemini’s AI Robotics & Experiences Lab, represents one of the first large-scale applications of what engineers describe as physical AI, the point where machine intelligence begins to take physical form.

    Over the next four months, engineers at Orano Melox will evaluate Hoxo’s accuracy, movement agility, and responsiveness across a range of scenarios, including equipment inspection, sample handling, and technical maintenance. The trials will determine how humanoid robotics can support operators in tasks that require both precision and risk control.
    Arnaud Capdepon, Director of Orano Melox, said the project is part of the company’s broader strategy to integrate intelligent systems that work safely alongside people. Hoxo represents a new dimension of assistance. It combines human-level coordination with machine endurance, which could eventually allow teams to focus on high-value tasks while improving safety, he said.

    Pascal Brier, Chief Innovation Officer at Capgemini and member of its Group Executive Committee, added that the project blends multiple domains of expertise, including robotics, computer vision, and digital twins, into a single operational framework. Physical AI is not science fiction anymore. It is a way to extend human potential in environments where accuracy and safety must coexist, he said.

    France’s nuclear sector, valued at over €60 billion, has long been regarded as one of the most technologically advanced in the world. The introduction of humanoid robotics marks another chapter in that legacy, combining the country’s industrial know-how with digital transformation at a practical level. As the testing continues through early 2026, Orano and Capgemini expect Hoxo to pave the way for broader industrial deployment, offering a blueprint for intelligent automation in energy and beyond.

  • EV Uptake and SUV Demand Fuel Kia India’s Historic Sales Milestone in October 2025

    Sonet led the charge with 12,745 units. Carens Clavis and Seltos followed close behind, helping Kia India post a record 29,556 units in October 2025, its highest-ever sales month, supported by festive demand, SUV popularity and EV adoption.

    Kia India recorded its strongest monthly sales since entering the Indian market, clocking 29,556 units in October 2025. This marks a 30 percent year-on-year growth compared to the 22,735 units sold in October 2024.
    The performance was led by the Sonet, which contributed 12,745 units. Carens Clavis and Carens Clavis EV together added 8,779 units, while the Seltos contributed 7,130 units. These three models were key to Kia’s record-breaking milestone.

    The Carens Clavis EV, Kia’s first locally manufactured seven-seater electric vehicle in the mass-premium segment, has gained traction for its family-friendly layout and sustainable drive, making a notable entry in the Indian EV space.
    Commenting on the achievement, Mr Atul Sood, Senior Vice-President and National Head, Sales and Marketing, Kia India, said, “October 2025 marks a historic milestone in Kia India’s journey.     Kia India has also reported approximately 10 percent Year-to-Date growth with 236,138 units sold in 2025 so far, compared to 215,443 units in the same period last year. According to the company, this growth has been propelled by festive season momentum, a strong SUV lineup, and favourable taxation under revised GST slabs.

    Beyond products, Kia’s growth has been supported by its strategic expansion into Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, along with investment in digital platforms and localized manufacturing. The company has also maintained focus on customer-centric innovations, technology upgrades, and overall ownership experience.
